My Picks: London’s Best Countryside Retreats

The English countryside is a popular destination right now to explore. Whether it’s the coastal town of Dover, or the many little towns in the Cotswolds, there are incredible retreats just a few short hours outside of central London that are worth exploring. I can personally attest that these country resorts and hotels are more than worth the visit.

soho farmhouse

Soho Farmhouse

Chipping Norton, United Kingdom

Soho Farmhouse, part of the many Soho House member clubs, is set on 100 acres of beautiful and stunning Oxfordshire countryside with 10 garden rooms, 40 cabins, a 4-bedroom cottage, 40 piglets, and a 7-bedroom farm house. This charming retreat is one of my favorites in the Cotswolds and offers plenty of activities aside from the many restaurants and places to sip on their famed libations. My recommendations? Bike down their charming bike paths, climb into a row boat with your special someone, or take a swim in both their outdoor and indoor heated pools. The Cowshed Spa is also a must to visit! And, if that isn’t enough, watch a movie in the Electric Barn Cinema, and go for a country ride on one of their many beautiful horses. Keep in mind that you must be a member of Soho House to stay over the weekends. Non-members can stay during the week though.

babington house

Babington House

Somerset, United Kingdom

Another Soho House mainstay is one of my favorite U.K. country destinations: Babington House in the heart of Somerset. Like Soho Farmhouse, this is a Soho House property available to members only on the weekends, but it is open to non-members to stay during the week. Located in the village of Babington, it’s a grade II listed manor house which was built in 1705. It’s perfect for a weekend away from busy London. Recommendation: take walks among the ancient trees that frame the property.

Lympstone Manor

Devon, United Kingdom

You can see the River Exe and Exe Estuary from this charming property, which is a big plus.  Set in a charming Georgian country home on a 28-acre estate, the upscale hotel has a contemporary and modern feel with old-world touches. It’s just a mile from the Village, and close to plenty of restaurants and bars!

cowley manor

Cowley Manor

Cheltenham

If Soho Farmhouse is completely booked, one of my favorite Cotswolds destinations to stay which isn’t too far off from the members club is Cowley Manor. Set in Cheltenham, the artsy hotel offers a pool and is generous on space. It’s a great place to escape the business of London and although it has been a manor house for centuries, the Manor feels very updated. Take a walk up nearby Crickley Hill, which is famous for its views and wild flowers!
