Italy. You can’t say it without thinking of the grand hotels in some of the world’s best cities. Resorts are everywhere, sprinkled across the landscape of this southern country in Europe. What are the best? From southern Italy to northern Italy, these are my favorite picks:
A trip to some of Italy’s main cities would never be complete without a detour to Lake Como. Villa d’Este is one of Italy’s finest 5 star hotels in Lake Como. For hundreds of years, this property has been a residence of the aristocracy – Princesses, Marquises, Sultans and Tsar’s. Then, in 1873, an elegant and charming five-star resort opened up and became one of the most celebrated destinations in the world. Overlooking one of the most romantic lakes in the world, Lake Como, Villa d’Este is surrounded by a wonderful 10-hectare private park. The floating pool on the lake is arguably one of my favorite places at the resort. Step inside, and opulence is everywhere.
Located in the heart of Capri, the Grand Hotel Quisisana is synonymous with the glitz of Italy’s islands. Since the mid 19th Century, an exclusive crowd has helped establish this hotel as a prime destination for those looking to mingle with the elite and have a calming getaway. The hotel is steeped in history. Over the years, historical figures, including Ernest Hemingway and Jean Paul Sartre, have passed through the marble lobby and admired the surrounding natural beauty of the hotel’s manicured park. The sun-drenched bedrooms are a study in understated elegance, with mostly white walls, floors and furnishings emphasizing the blue ocean views. Dine at acclaimed restaurant RendezVouz, with an entrance directly on the glamorous Via Camerelle, or at the poolside Colombaia Restaurant, both offering Italian-inspired cuisine and an excellent wine list. Some favorite restaurants near the resort of mine are Lido del Faro with a Mediterranean-inspired menu of seafood and other Italian dishes, Bagni Tiberio’s Restaurant, Le Grottelle, where you’ll dine on homemade regional dishes in a unique interior and Terrazza Brunella, a romantic eatery with tasty wines and incredible pasta dishes.
Ahh Tuscany. The mere mention of it arouses relaxation in the minds of those thinking about it. At Castel Monastero, the same is true. Near Siena, in the heart of Chianti, this beautifully restored castle offers stunning views of Tuscany. And, you won’t have to worry about dated decor inside because it’s a castle. The rooms and suites are modern with a touch of the old. A spa, and wellness area is one of the biggest draws of this incredible destination. It’s a must! Don’t forget to take part in nearby wine wasting.
This former 11th century palace boasts the luxuries anyone would dream of. Marbled hallways lead to rooms with incredible antiques and paintings by old masters. Walk past the lemon groves and olive vines outdoors, and discover the nearby town of Ravello.
Situated in the heart of Rome, Hotel de Russie is a favorite with its contemporary design with classic influences. The 120 room hotel offers sweeping views of the historic city streets and is just a short walk from the Piazza del Popolo and the famed 18th century Spanish Steps. What’s to love? The hotel is quintessentially Italian with its plush gardens, peaceful grounds, the mix of contemporary with classic influences, incredible views, gourmet restaurants with Roman cuisine, and 5-star amenities.
A 60 metre infinity pool, tennis courts, a world class spa, four restaurants, five bars, and more. What more can you want from a resort in the middle of Sicily? Take in ocean views, and relax in the many pools and places to venture off to on this property.
If you know anything about an Aman property, you know that it will be over the top 5 star luxury. And, the same goes for Aman’s signature Venice destination. Situated beside the Grand Canal in a 16th century palace, this elegant hotel is a 2 minute walk from many destinations in Venice, including the Piazza San Marco. Sleek rooms with posh amenities make this one of the best choices if you’re visiting Venice.
When it comes to luxury accommodations in the city of Rome, there are a select few names at the tip of everyone’s lips – but The Hassler is on that list. Want to be close to the Spanish Steps? Then the Hassler Roma Hotel is the place to visit. The hotel is just a short 8 minute walk from the Trevi Fountain and 2 km from the Colosseum too. It’s one o the most central hotels to stay at if you’re visiting Rome.
