Fang Yang is one of China’s leading fashion designers. Mixing Asian and western style elements, Yang is widely recognized throughout the world for her distinctive lines and handcrafted origami shapes in her designs.
Chinese Roots Mixed With Parisian Influence
The designer discovered her love for fashion during her teenage years while playing with fabrics and clothes. Yang studied fashion at Paris’ esteemed ESMOD School, where she crafted her first ready-to-wear collections. During her Parisian years, Fang mingled between fashion crowds and contemporary art circles, attending modern dance performances, ‘vernissages’ and art exhibitions. Inspired by women in these groups, an idea sparkled in her mind to design collections for them and create an artistic and elegant label.
Meticulous Refinement & True-To-Detail Approach
Fang began officially designing with different fashion houses during her studies in Paris before she launched her brand By FANG in 2008. Captivated by the creative energy in Shanghai, she returned to debut her eponymous brand, which is composed of a prêt à porter ready-to-wear line by FANG and a couture collection, Atelier by FANG. Fang’s signature designs rely heavily on fine craftsmanship, fusing unexpected elements and fabrics to deliver a mesmerizing effect. It is a pure and modern expression of Fang’s French “savoir faire” with a subtle tribute to her oriental origin.
Fang’s designs are recognized for their structured looks that are modern, yet traditional, feminine lines, signature origami elements, and fine tailoring. Sourcing the highest quality fabrics from around the world is also at the heart of the fashion designer’s success. While fabrics are sourced internationally from France for couture and Japan, Italy and Turkey for her ready-to-wear line, Fang stays true to her roots in production. Couture production is 100% in-house at the brand’s headquarters in Shanghai (which is a part of the brand’s fashion house where they welcome private clients).
Since 2013, Fang has chosen to focus on Asia as a key market, developing a couture and RTW presence mostly in China and Japan. She is now starting a more dedicated process to develop sales in the USA, Europe and UAE by hosting pop-up events and trunk shows for the Couture collections.
Fang debuted her first couture collection Atelier by FANG FW19 recently in Paris to world-wide acclaim. What’s next for the emerging designer? Yang will soon showcase her SS20 RTW collection in a more intimate showroom style setting during September’s Paris Fashion Week.
